So Goes the Night

So Goes the Night

It all adds up to a lifetime.

So goes the night,
right into this day
both clear and cold,
taut like the strap
securing the tarp covering
a stack of firewood.

So goes this day.
Yet who knows but God
the number of long days
you, me or someone else,
has sighed and thought,
Please come tomorrow.

So goes tomorrow,
and the day after,
and the day after that.

Pretty soon it all adds up
to a lifetime.

Do not try to live forever, you will not succeed.
~ George Bernard Shaw
